Edinburgh

Capital of Scotland since the 15th Century, Edinburgh stands on seven hills creating the dramatic skyline of this lively cosmopolitan city. What better way to see this fantastic city than from the top of a City Sightseeing Tour Bus. Compare Edinburgh's Old Town, where families lived in cramped conditions and rubbish was thrown out of the windows to the elegant Georgian New Town with its three main streets and a square at either end. Hear about the hangings that took place in the Grassmarket as you marvel at the impenetrable Castle Rock above you and hear about the attempts to capture Edinburgh Castle. See the Royal Mile which joins Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House.

Pope Benedict XVI will make the first ever official Papal state visit to the United Kingdom from 16 to 19 September 2010 (the trip to the UK by Pope John Paul II in 1982 was a pastoral visit) and the four day UK tour will begin in Edinburgh. It is estimated that up to 1 billion television viewers around the world will watch his arrival at Edinburgh Airport. From there, the Pope will travel directly to the Palace of Holyroodhouse where he will be received by Her Majesty the Queen at approximately 11.00am and attend a reception in his honour. The public will not be able to view the Pope on his journey from the airport to Holyroodhouse. The opportunity to see him will come when he leaves the palace. The Catholic Church has organised a St Ninian’s Parade on Princes Street which will take place while the Pope is with the Queen. This event will include pipers, historic characters and children from St Ninian’s schools across Scotland (Catholic, Episcopalian and non-denominational). The Parade will begin at Regent Road and progress along Princes Street. More information on the parade can be found at www.stniniansday.co.uk. At approximately 12.30pm, the Pope will travel along Princes Street, Lothian Road and past Bruntsfield in the Popemobile to his next engagement at Cardinal Keith O’Brien’s official residence in Morningside. Spectators will be encouraged to line the whole route to avoid overcrowding in Princes Street. He will then travel to Glasgow to hold an open air Mass at Bellahouston Park before returning to London from Glasgow Airport.

A large number of spectators are expected in Edinburgh on 16 September which will result in some disruption to the city. Bus services that cross Princes Street will be suspended for certain periods and there will be road closures, parking suspensions and possible changes to refuse collection on the day. Future updates will list these changes in more detail and www.edinburgh.gov.uk/papalvisit will be updated regularly with relevant information.
