South Tyneside
Discover a rich heritage, a beautiful coastline and sample some good old seaside fun on this popular hour long hop-on hop-off tour around South Tyneside.
The tour starts at South Shields town centre, home to the fascinating South Shields Museum and Art Gallery as well a good choice of shops and a market, before heading towards Arbeia Roman Fort. This fort once stood guard at the mouth of the Tyne and is part of the mighty Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site.
Not to be missed next is South Shields seafront. Attracting millions of visitors each year the seafront epitomises the traditional seaside experience. Dig for sandcastles on the sandy beach, ride a rollercoaster at the fun fair, stroll through the beautiful parks and experience the many other family friendly activities here.
The bus then follows the spectacular coastline south, offering superb views of the beautiful bays and dramatic rock formations before stopping at Souter Lighthouse, the world’s first lighthouse to be lit by reliable electric means.
As the bus heads towards the town of Jarrow hop off the bus at Temple Park, a leading leisure complex, or take advantage of the many discounts at the Barbour Factory Shop. And once in Jarrow be sure to visit St Pauls Church and Bede’s World, a hugely interesting site and the UK’s nomination for World Heritage Site in 2011.
The bus then heads back to South Shields with stops at the Customs House, where you can take in their lovely art gallery and enjoy a show at the theatre. Or why not take advantage of the stop for South Shields ferry and combine a River Tyne cruise with the CitySightseeing tour.
