Italy

Italy is known for once having an empire that stretched across the globe, and for being home to the most magnificent churches, frescos, sculptures and Renaissance paintings in Europe. Italy is festooned with the relics of more than 3,000 years of history, and an atmosphere that ranges from vibrant, bustling, fashionable cities to quiet, pastoral hillside olive farms and seaside fishing villages.

Italy's cities present breathtaking architecture from the curved arches of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence to the magnificence of the Colosseum in Rome. Home of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Carvaggio and Botticelli, its artworks are huge draw to visitors. Nestled into the outskirts of Rome is the independent Vatican City, the seat of the Pope and home to the famous St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.

Visit beautiful Pisa, home to the famous Leaning Tower, which stands at 180 feet high and leans more than 14 feet out of line, due to its faulty foundation on unstable soil. Climb the 300 steps and enjoy a fantastic view from the top. The city has plenty more to offer from the National Museum of Palazzo Reale to the ancient Citadel Vecchia. Admire the gothic apex of Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina and wander through the streets of Piazza Garibaldi.

Livorno has much to offer. Minus the gondolas and water taxis, Livorno’s very own “little Venice” offers a glimpse of historic Livorno as it was in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today the port is still very active and features a large fishing fleet plus an abundance of commercial activity. Soak up the city’s history, try your hand at windsurfing or take time out on nearby Tre Ponti Beach.

Visit Verona which was one of the most powerful cities during the early rule of the Roman Empire. Explore the medieval castle Castelvecchio, marvel at the richly decorated interior of the Romanesque styled Duomo and see the balcony at the Cappelletti House which is famed for its associations with the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Italy is home to more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country on earth, with an incredible 47 sites of global historical significance dotted around the country. Let City Sightseeing help you explore this incredible country.
