Many ancient churches in Albufeira were renovated after a devastating earthquake in the 18th century. Consequently a large proportion of local landmarks now display a fusion of architectural styles. There are also several centuries-old Moorish sights dotted around old-town Albufeira. Admire the unique architecture evident in the Manueline style S. Sebastio Church, the 18th century Sant’Ana Church and the restored gothic-styled Misericordia Chapel. The Bell Tower in the Parish Church is one of the town’s landmarks. The tower is topped with an eight-bell carillon and the stairwell stands 28 metres high. Visit The Tower of Medronheira which was built in the 1500s and was used to watch the seaward horizon for pirates and invaders. Hop off and admire the impressive statue of St. Vincente which commemorates the famous missionary’s eventual martyrdom in Japan.
