Rua de Santa Maria is perhaps Funchal’s oldest street, as the first houses were built in the area in 1425, only a few years after Madeira was first settled by the Portuguese, after being discovered accidentally in 1418 when two ships were blown off course by a storm. It’s as attractive as you’d imagine a 15th-century street to be, but today, it’s even more special thanks to the Projecto Arte Portas Abertas, a project whose aim is to paint each and every door on this picturesque street with a different work of art. You just have to come here and see these incredible painted doors, which have now also spread onto neighbouring streets. They’re a little ray of sunshine on an island that already has its fair share!
