Beautifully situated Funchal is the capital of Madeira with rich sub tropical vegetation and an important port of call for many cruise ships. Hop off at Estrada Monumental for a choice of restaurants and an assortment of shops. Those with a head for heights who wish to take advantage of spectacular views of the city should ride the cable car or Teleferico. Hop off at Rotunda do Infante and discover one of the most historic spots in the island – the statue of Portuguese navigator Infante D. Henrique.

You will never be short of things to do in the city. Take a walk around the grounds, play a set of tennis, or take a dip in the pool at leafy Quinta Magnolia Park which was once home to the British Country Club. Visit the stunning Igreja de S. Martinho and the cemeterio S. Martinho. Of the three main wine lodges in Funchal which are open to the public, Old Blandy's Wine Lodge which is the most popular. You can pre-book tours at this former wine producer and as Sir Winston Churchill commented: "To drink Madeira is to sip history with every glass." Hop off at Pico dos Barcelos viewpoint to take advantage of a dramatic 360 degree view of the city of Funchal and look out across at, the Deserted Islands in the background.

Funchal offers a variety of restaurants serving Portuguese, Madeiran, Italian, Mediterranean and French cuisine. As the sun goes down, there are plenty of places to unwind. You can enjoy live music and a drink ‘al fresco’ on a nice esplanade or by the harbour. Dance the night away at one of the discotheques located in the centre of Funchal or take your pick from a row of clubs opposite the freight harbour. Some venues also offer folklore evenings or if you want to try your luck, you could pay a visit to Madeira’s Casino.
