Built in 1076, 10 years after the Battle of Hastings, the Norman Colchester Castle is steeped in history. Spend some time at the Castle and Park or see the War Memorial and take a wander through the Firstsite Art Gallery. Hop off at St. Botolph’s Priory which is an impressive example of early Norman architecture, built in flint and reused Roman brick. The elaborate church, badly damaged by cannon fire during the Civil War siege of 1648, displays huge circular pillars and round arches. Browse through quiet streets lined with small specialist shops and restaurants or visit Wivenhoe Park, home to the University of Essex. Shopaholics might prefer to spend time at Lion Walk, Cuvler or Turner Rise Shopping Centres. There is fun to be had at Rollerworld & Quasar if you hop off at East Street where there are plenty of things to do for the whole family. There are photo opportunities at Balkerne Gate, The largest Roman arch in Britain and the Jumbo Water Tower. The tower’s name was coined by Reverend John Irvine in 1882 on account of his annoyance of the fact that the huge tower dwarfed his nearby rectory.
